Maxwell arrived on the scene in 1996 with the classic "Urban Hang Suite" album, garnering fans, mainstream attention and adulation. He released an unplugged EP the following year in 1997, before preparing his 2nd full length album "Embrya". Maxwell decided to go in a different direction with "Embrya", choosing a more atmospheric sound combined with mini elements of soul as well.

From the start of the album, it was obvious that Maxwell was searching to bring a more ecletic vibe, even with the tracklisting. The song titles were a bit different from the norm, starting with "Gestation:Mythos", all the way to "eachhoureachsecondeachminuteeachday: Of My Life", Maxwell let his creativity shine as bright as possible. He implemented speaking Spanish on a track as well, creating an entirlely different realm on Embrya from Urban Hang Suite.

My favorite songs here have to be "Submerge:Til We Become The Sun", "Everwanting: To Want You To Want", "Luxury:Cococure", "Know These Things: You Shouldn't", "Drowndeep: Hula", and the very smooth "Matrimony: Maybe You". The whole album in itself is greatness, but those songs are the true standouts. Maxwell coasts through this album with his usual smooth vocals, but his willingness to branch out and flex his creative muscles even more paid off.

If you don't remember this album vividly, go to Spotify or your music stream service of choice and revisit.
