Retrospective: The Best N64 Games

By @TrueGodImmortal

Well, we've arrived at this point: it is DAR Gaming Week. With nostalgia and legacy always being a factor for some DAR articles, we talk the Nintendo 64 and the best games to be released on that system. Let's get into this.

*Bomberman 64

-While not my personal favorite, I recognize the impact of the game. All around fun, Inventive for the system and a classic still.

*Perfect Dark

-Another classic game that truly stood the test of time, this was one of the most solid games to be released on the console and ran on a similar engine as the Goldeneye game as well with obvious similarities. The story of Joanna Dark Is a fun one to play.

*Mario Party

-There were three of these games on 64, but I chose the first one. It is the original and has so much replay value and fun gameplay. Mario is of course the cornerstone of Nintendo anyway, and this game just reminds you why.

*Banjo Kazooie

-I was sleeping on this game and ended up loving this when I played it. It's a crazy game, and spawned a sequel but what makes it so special to me is the fun gameplay. While N64 always had fun games, Banjo Kazooie was just the maximum.

*Donkey Kong 64

-Without a doubt, one of the greatest series in Nintendo history is Donkey Kong and the one for 64 was just as much fun, if not more fun than previous editions on other consoles by the brand.

*Star Fox 64

-A sequel to the original from Super Nintendo, this is one of the most fun games to play as we once again control the adventure of Fox McCloud.

*Mario Kart 64

-Come on now. You already knew this was coming. Mario Kart in general is amazing fun and the multi player gameplay was addictive.

*The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

-N64 was knocking it out of the park with everything Zelda related it seemed. Set in Termina, this one finds Link on yet another great adventure. Inventive game that doesn't get the credit it deserves at times.

*Goldeneye 007

-I really don't even feel like this needs a true explanation because this is one of the absolute greatest games ever. Period.

*Super Mario 64

-This was one of the games that truly jumpstarted the whole N64 movement I feel. It really had  great gameplay and ended up being one of the most enjoyable games ever on the console.

*Super Smash Bros.

-Take your favorite Nintendo characters. Put them against each other. Fight. End of story. And with that, you have one of Nintendo's greatest ideas. And a classic game to boot.

*WCW/NWO Revenge

-Wrestling games don't get enough credit on consoles. This WCW/NWO classic takes us to 1998 era WCW and we see guys like Goldberg, Raven, Hollywood Hogan, etc all take part in madness through this game. One of the best wrestling games ever to me.

*WWF No Mercy

-From one of the best to the actual best wrestling game. This game is flawless from top to bottom. The essential game of the Attitude Era, nothing could truly be better than the greatness of WWF No Mercy.

*NBA Showtime

-Midway, creators of the legendary NBA Jam, bring you what is essentially the N64 version of NBA Jam, but with a little less exaggeration. Still, over the top and a bit crazy, I absolutely loved this game.

*NFL Blitz

-The Arcade style game with hard hitting moments, this was without a doubt one of the most entertaining games on the console. Over the top, yet always fun, Blitz definitely has to make this list.

*Resident Evil 2

-Now I've always loved shooting games and zombie games are truly one of my favorite things to play (I still play Left 4 Dead now on 360 when I feel nostalgic), but
Resident Evil 2 was special. The first of its kind to hit N64, in many ways, it is the essential game in the entire series and one of the most exhilarating games for the system.

*The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

-Possibly the greatest game of all time on N64, this adventure in Hyrule stands as the most praised and loved game on N64. Revolutionary with the targeting system and the epic story, it is easily one of the best games on N64 ever.

While I may have missed a few others (some might say the Banjo Kazooie sequel, Star Wars, Glover, Turok, more Mario related games, and countless others), I chose the ones that I truly felt are the best overall, but if you have more to add, please do so in the comments below.
